Travels  to the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu is the best-known and most spectacular archaeological site on the American continent and, for many travelers; it is the whole purpose of a trip to Peru. As a world traveler and avid vacationer, Peru is one of the most spectacular tourist and vacation destinations in the world.

As a born and raised Peruvian, this is a matter of pride; but at the same time, it is also a matter of slight frustration because, there is so much more to see and do! And this, from personal experience. Let me give you a couple of examples of some of the most informative tourist attractions in Peru. (in no particular order):

Uros Islands, Lake Titicaca: The floating Uros Islands are made out of woven reeds by the descendants of a pre-Incan population that live in the area. The biggest island has several buildings, including a school, post office and an overabundance of souvenir shops.

Colca Canyon: The Colca Canyon is nearly twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, and almost the deepest in the world (the Cotahuasi Canyon, also in Peru, stole its title). To get there, you’ll pass through several wonderfully traditional villages, ending in the “mirador”, or viewing point.  There, you’ll enjoy the awesome sights and the Andean condors.

Surfing: Peru has long been one of the world’s top surfing destinations. The Beach Boys even mentioned the town of Cerro Azul in the song “Surfin’ Safari”. Surf tours are growing in number to the best waves in Lima, Punta Hermosa, Mancora, and Chicama, which is home to the world’s largest left hand break.

Gastronomic Tours: Peruvian cuisine has achieved such international recognition that now there are tours specifically designed to cater to tourists that want to try new flavors, new inputs and maybe learning to prepare some typical dishes. The main places to go are Lima, Arequipa and Cusco.

Nazca Lines,

Spread across an incredible 500 sq km (193 sq mi) of arid, rock-strewn land, the Nazca Lines remain one of the world’s great archaeological mysteries. The lines are almost imperceptible at ground level; only viewed from above do they form their striking vision.

Máncora

The Caribbean like waters at this surf town in the north of Peru has yet to be discovered by the masses. There are dozens of small hotels, a few of them pure luxury, spread out up and down the coast on a dozen or so different beaches.

Choquequirao: Often called Machu Picchu’s sister city for its similar design, though unlike Machu Picchu it cannot be reached by train, so it sees far fewer visitors. The 1,800 hectares complex is only partially excavated, so you get to see it at a more natural state. The only way there is a 3-5 day.

There are literally hundreds, if not, thousands of other things to go see and do in Peru, such as the adobe citadel of Chan Chan, the pyramids of Túcume, the 5,000 thousand year old city of Caral, Huascarán National Park, Chavin de Huantar, the capital city of Lima, the city of Arequipa, the Manu Biosphere Reserve, Puerto Belén in Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon, the citadel of Kuelap, the national reserve of Paracas and its impressive hotels, the Pisco destilleries in the southern coast, the rock forests in the Cajamarca region, etc.

In conclusion: If you’re planning on making a trip to “The Land of the Incas” please keep in mind that there are a lot of lesser known hidden jewels there that may be as impressive and as fun as Machu Picchu.

Find an adventure such as a vacation rental instead of a hotel and resort.  Let the kids help make the menu and don’t eat out.  Pack your meals and cook or BBQ at the rental.  One thing that is great about a rental property is that you save a ton of money by not eating out and can enjoy each other’s company that does not require you to be cooped up in one hotel room.
•  Go somewhere you can find history with historic sites, such as battlefields, forts and monuments, and uncover the wonders of the world around you without the huge travel expense.  You can find these in your own backyard, just a quick car ride away.
• Camping is an adventure in itself and quite the bargain, but if you don’t have the equipment or the desire to pitch a tent, many parks offer other options such as rental cabins or lodges. State and national parks often offer low- or no-cost amenities including boating, canoeing, horseback riding and hiking.

•  For family fun, all go on the internet together and search for last-minute travel bargains. Often package deals are a lower-cost alternative, but be sure you know exactly what is included.

Times are tough for everyone and it is more important than ever to do things you’re your family that is in your budget and still exciting for the entire family.  We have to focus on the good times in our lives and the quality time spent with family.  A small family weekend getaway can involve a 15 drive to a small resort with a pool, or a rental on the beach.  Families don’t care about WHERE you go as long as you GO.”

Days 3-4: Mariposa Grove-Glacier Point-Yosemite Valley

After a morning shuttle to Yosemite, we hike in Mariposa, the Park’s largest of three groves of Giant Sequoias. Mariposa Grove contains several hundred of these monarchs, including two of the 25 largest trees in the world. The following day is spent on the spectacular Panaorama Trail, with cascading waterfalls, granite monoliths and magnificent views of the valley below.

Days 5-6: Tuolomne Meadows-Yosemite Falls

We venture into the Park’s high country to Tuolumne Meadows and a hike to Lower and Upper Cathedral Lakes, among the most impressive of Yosemite’s granite-wrapped High Sierra lakes. Our final hike provides a spectacular conclusion to our week as we pass through red fir and lodgepole forest to Yosemite Point with a commanding view of Yosemite Valley below. We then descend past Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls, zigzagging our way to the Valley. Following a shuttle to Fresno, we say our farewells.
